This week we have been celebrating Chinese New Year in the forest. On Tuesday we all had the opportunity to come in dressed in something red, a symbol of luck and happiness. Throughout the whole day we all had a chance to share and learn about traditions from Chinese New Year. We started by reading some wonderful stories, two of our favourites were called ‘The empty pot’ and ‘The magic paint brush’. Then our little ones had an opportunity to make their very own fortune cookies. Further crafts included making lanterns, exploring Chinese letters, and using chopsticks. The children loved having the opportunity to take home their very own red envelopes.
The children continue to love music man Joe and this week was no different. It was especially exciting when he brought in more instruments including a ukulele and trombone. Each of the children got their own chance to use an instrument of their choice and it was so exciting to hear the different sounds. It was incredible listening to Joe play the trombone and some of the children began marching in time with the music.
The mad scientist made a visit again and this time he made elephant toothpaste. First the children created a stage for the experiment to take place and then worked together to move logs for themselves to sit on, making sure they were a safe distance away. The little ones watched in awe as each of the ingredients were added, taking turns to support the mad scientist. It was amazing watching the joy and amazement on the children’s faces as the mixture flowed out of the top!
We have continued our own experiments in the forest by brewing our own tea. The children have had a chance to taste all sorts of flavours including Mint Chocolate or Toffee Apple. We have been able to explore all the senses while making this, enjoying the smell, the changing colours and of course the yummy taste.
Everything we do in the forest is there to expand the children’s experiences and teach them new skills. It is wonderful to watch as the children all sit with their friends, learning new things and experiencing something that they can take away with them!
