“Look what I can do!!”
This week in the forest has given the children brilliant opportunities to push themselves and get into their strong flow of creativity and learning! Our frosty environment creates new interesting things to look at each morning, like ice which freezes to look like interesting crystals, or perfect leaf prints from the frost! The children love to see how their environment changes and develops in all different weather conditions.
One of our favourite activities this week has been using our fine motor skills to practise our weaving and winding skills. Maria led an activity where the children used brightly coloured twine to weave patterns and shapes across small hooks and pegs attached to a plank of wood! The children loved the calming motion and repetition of the weaving and were so proud to show off their patterns when they were finished. This relaxing activity helped to build the focus of our younger children, sitting with each other for most of the morning!
Another activity we’ve really enjoyed has been matching letters in our names! We have some fabric leaves which have different letters on them, and the educators would write the children’s names on a piece of cardboard so that we could find the correct letter and lay it on top. This activity developed as the children incorporated their own ideas to use our natural leaves in the activity too “has this one got a letter? Noooo… has this one got a letter? Yes!” We always love to see the children use their literacy skills so naturally in the forest!
