Fulham - Stories of mermaids

Stories of mermaids and porridge for teddy bears!

The heatwave this week has waved an air of calm and slowness to the site this week. Everyone was taking their time to walk to our site and there were multiple cool downs at our Jerry can filling station! Spaces were set up using our benches and pallets as tables. This allowed the children to take part in focused activities like painting, constructing with recycled materials, musical instruments, and stories being read in the shade. Not only has this time been needed to relax and take it easy in the sunshine but the simple set up has really helped those new children with us to settle in and take things at their own pace.

Some of the children were really inspired by all of the stories being read and decided to create their own. Karen sat with a group of children and began writing their stories for them. One was about a helicopter that broke down that had a tail from a mermaid! The other was a Paw patrol rescue mission. We thought this brought a brilliant opportunity to introduce helicopter stories to the setting, so we gathered the children who were interested into a circle and acted out the various characters. The children loved taking turns to play out the characters and enjoyed thinking about how they might pretend to be a helicopter or a fireman putting out a fire!

Towards the end of the week, we celebrated national teddy bear day! We welcomed the children to bring in a teddy bear from home and had a picnic served by our little chefs in the mud kitchen! The favourite dish of the day was of course…Porridge! Recipe cards were hung up for the children to use as a provocation for play. It inspired them to begin making porridge using pots, pans, honey pots and jugs for muddy, chocolatey milk!

Best of all the teddy bears loved getting lots of hugs from the children and educators throughout the day and they sat with us on our stage area as we had our snack bringing on a conversation what everyone’s bears were called.

We hope you all have wonderful weekends, and we cannot wait to see what adventures we have next week!
