This week we went bug-crazy and displayed our love for the creatures around us by creating homes for our creepy crawly friends. Using recycled cardboard materials, we chose a box that we thought would be perfect for such a creation. The space was divided into rooms and we discussed how we could make them cozy enough to live in! We packed the rooms with repurposed materials and natural treasures that we collected on our nature walk. One comfy room was padded with pink petals, soft enough to sleep on! Another room was packed with twigs, so ants and spiders could crawl their way through the cracks. Another room was filled with repurposed wooden bobbins, which created an exciting maze of twisting turns for worms to wriggle their way through.
We became rather jealous of the incredible space we had created for our creepy crawly friends and wished we ourselves could wiggle our way through the exciting space. So of course, a crate-creation was fashioned with this in mind, and a life size maze/climbing frame was constructed, named… The Bug Hotel! Our Little Forest Folk-ers climbed up and down the construction, counting the floors as they went, “down to the ground floor!”
We extended this activity across the week so all our little ones could have a go at being insect architects! They chose boxes of their preferred size and got straight out to exploring the grounds for nature’s natural treasures. Some children even went as far as to decorate the walls of their hotels with their very own artwork. They coated the walls with large prints of abstract forms, beautiful line drawings and repeated patterns. A room fit for a King or Queen! 👑 🐜
