Fulham - A Nest of Squirrels

What a lovely week we have had at Little Forest Folk Fulham. The children have all been amazing and settled back into our forest routine very well. We have had some new faces join us and our older Forest Folk-ers have welcomed them in. They have showed them all around the forest in true explorer style; including the best places to hide away for discussions, the best place to make a delicious recipe, the best running routes and the best places to find creepy crawlies (just to name a few)- not forgetting to mention helping them to understand our forest school rules!

A highlight of the week must be a nest of squirrels in the conifer tree above camp. The children have been fascinated by the sounds that they make comparing them to some other bird calls that we can hear. One day, one of the kits (a baby squirrel) fell out of the nest and from afar the children were fascinated by the movements and calls that the squirrel made, with responding calls from the mother up in the tree. Eventually the mother came down to show the squirrel how to climb back up the tree and a great sense of relief was felt all through our camp!

This of course followed on with lots of role play with kits and mothers and brought on the discussion about what other young animals were called. Some of our favourites being ‘pup’ for a young mouse and ‘signet’ for a young swan. It has been so lovely to hear the children so engaged and fascinated by the natural world around us and continue to show such empathy not only to one another but to our surroundings as well.

Thank you all so much for a lovely week, we hope you all have a lovely weekend!
