Chiswick - marvellous March fun!

It’s been a gorgeous week in the woods filled with marvellous March fun!

Spring is desperate to show her head as we move towards the meteorological first day tomorrow and we have been celebrating all sorts of events that have occurred this week.

To celebrate the end of winter we have made gorgeous artwork with everything from dirt and leaves to spices and macaroni (we had to remind ourselves of “no picking and no licking” and we all made sure to not put anything in our mouths).

Throughout the week we have been on a number of adventure walks trying to spot where Spring is winning the battle against winter. Ruby buds and shoots are starting to form on the end of branches, there are daffodils and snowdrops to be found peeking out of the ground around the gardens. We watched the geese and swans and took turns counting how many of each we could see and recognising the respective numbers from our numeral stars. We marvelled at the rainbow of Camellia flowers we’re so lucky to have all around the gardens and picked our favourite colours.

The middle of the week was St Patrick’s Day! On our way to the forest we saw older children at the school next door wearing more green than normal! Some had hats with Ireland’s flag on. We talked a bit about St. Patrick’s Day and turned into leprechauns digging for gold in the forest (we didn’t find any, but we did find some really cool stones instead!). With clay we made pots of gold using a pinch pot technique to take home.

Thursday was Global Recycling Day and we discussed how we recycle at nursery.
The adults introduced the children to our new fridge freezer and talked about how the old fridge freezer will be recycled. The company we gave it to will break it down into its parts so that it can be turned into other products.

We then looked at our food delivery and we discussed how the bags are compostable. This was a new word to some of us so we explored what that might mean. At LFF we use the compostable food bags and recycle them as nappy bags.

Finally, Friday is Red Nose Day, so we are going to be using face paints in the forest to paint our noses! We plan to make up some comic sketches to perform to our friends and hope to hear laughter through the trees in our tribute to Comic Relief. All this in addition to our usual activities!

We have been mummies and daddies, pterodactyls, climbers, architects, palaeontologists, archaeologists, doctors, engineers, problem solvers, risk takers, teachers, artists, musicians, mathematicians, authors and acrobats... to name but a few! It is no surprise that the week has flown by!
