Chiswick -  A Spring Scavenger Hunt

We have had a wonderful week in the forest. The forest is starting to bloom and our Little Forest Folk-ers have been loving it! This week we went on a spring scavenger hunt and filled a bucket full of goodies. We found Camellias, pinecones and some pretty green leaves. We then added some water to our bucket of goodies to make fairy soup, potions and poisons of course!

At the start of the week, it was spring equinox, also known as Ostara. To celebrate we brought out our bowsaw and used our muscles to make a few tree cookies. We then turned one of our tree cookies into a moon and the other into the sun, to signify that the sun and moon would be out for an equal amount of time that day. Some of our friends decided they wanted to use polystyrene balls instead to create the sun and the moon. This then turned into a conversation about the Earth, sun, moon and all the planets in our universe.

We have been bouncing our way through the week using our slack line. Practicing our balancing skills and trusting our strong legs to hold us up. Whilst exploring, we went on a mini beast hunt and found centipedes, wood lice and our favourite…wiggly worms!

Later in the week we went in search of colourful petals. We brought out our hammers and smashed the petals to print colourful patterns on plain fabric. The children loved testing out different style patterns. They tried stacking the petals, using whole flowers and then sprinkling them onto the fabric like confetti and letting them land where they may. Others were very specific with how they wanted their design to look. In the end they all looked wonderful!

Finally, we had a super fun race to help us learn how to get ready! We put 3 different coloured high vis in two lanes and had two children race at a time. Once the children successfully flipped their 3 high vis’s on, they then had to run into the hula hoop and bring it up over their bodies. They had the best time listening and waiting for the word go even as some of our educators tried to trick them with ready, steady, oranges!

Thank you for another magical week in the forest. It’s starting to get warmer and almost time for our summer waterproofs. We still advise putting a few layers on the top and the bottom at the moment, and don’t forget to layer up the socks!
