The highlight of this week at Little Forest Folk Winkworth has definitely been making hot cross buns from scratch! Our Little Forest Folk-ers got to use their math skills as they measured all the ingredients and talked about each step of the process. There was some lovely problem solving as they talked about why and how they could sieve the flour. There was also some great language used when discussing the yeast and the effects it would have on the dough. Once all the ingredients were mixed together, it was time to put it in the pot and let eager, hungry eyes watch the yeast do its job and raise the dough.
When we went to look at the dough in the afternoon there was a cheer of delight as we saw that the dough had indeed risen and was ready for our little bakers to roll in a ball. Before they were popped in the oven, our little ones gave their creation a glaze of honey and mixed some flour and water to make a cross on the top. They smelt delicious as they were cooking and even more yummy when we all ate them after tea!
We have been revisiting activities recently, and one firm favourite has been the bird lookout. Our little adventurers have been able to climb inside and quietly look at the birds. They used the binoculars to look out and then mark them off on the bird watching sheet.
With it being Easter we couldn’t not have an Easter egg hunt. All around we hid different coloured and numbered Easter eggs for them to find, discuss the patterns, colours and the number. Some of them were smaller than others and some were higher numbers to explore and discuss.
With the glorious sunshine showing it’s face again we decided to put the parachute up over the book corner for some shade, this looked gorgeous as all the colours reflected through from the sun. We sat in the shade amid all the pretty colours to enjoy some story time as well as role playing with some fancy dress.
What an excellent week, we hope everyone has a lovely long weekend!
