Here at Winkworth we had the most amazing time celebrating Unicorn Day. The children walked into a magical land of all things unicorn!
The activity that caught their attention the most was a giant unicorn that they could not only climb on and ride, but also climb under like a tunnel. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to use their gross motor skills as well as demonstrating great teamwork in helping each other up and down. We also put our fine motor skills and colours to the test as we threaded rainbow wooden bead bracelets and coloured in some unicorn pictures. It was lovely to hear our Little Forest Folk-ers rummaging through the beads looking for certain colours to make a pattern.
We got out the bow saw and the palm drill so that our little adventurers could make their very own unicorn out of wood to take home. We discussed how we can use the tools safely and then they set to work sawing some wood for the body and the head. They then used the palm drill to drill the holes for the legs, neck and horn. After this, the next job was to measure out the legs, neck and horn from sticks and cut them with the secateurs. They glued them all in, added some ears made from leaves and painted the horn the colour of their choice. Once this had all dried, they had some lovely imaginative play time with them.
The headbands that they made were a huge hit. Our little explorers had to measure their head to make the band fit and then add paper flowers and a horn with their choice of colours. Suddenly there really was a magical unicorn land as our little unicorns were all running around camp putting their incredible imaginations to good use.
With all the flowers that were used in the mud kitchen for our Unicorn Canteen we made cupcakes and lovely pink petal teas. The flowers were finished off by enjoying some hapa zome printing. The children chose their flowers, carefully placed them between some white fabric and then bashed them with a hammer. As they continued to bash, they could see all the colour dispersing onto the fabric. Very pretty!
