This week the children have flourished in activities. Earlier on in the week we spent a day at the scout hut due to the weather, but this didn’t stop them as they were outside for the majority of the day!
We have been collecting conkers for weeks now from our local horse chestnut trees which led to a fun tool work activity! We got the palm drills out with the aim to make bracelets and / or necklaces. For some, this was their first palm drill experience and wow... they did fantastically! Led by Olivia, our children are now able to identify the two main parts of the palm drill for safety. They also learnt which is their supporting and working hands according to the glove. It was great fun to explore how a conker holder works too, the children were twisting and twisting until the conker was secure. After experimenting, modelling and practising, our little explorers quickly became experts in drilling. A couple even created their own way to drill by rotating the conker holder in tandem with the drill! It wasn’t long until a hole was drilled, and our little adventurers were able to select their chosen string to thread through. We selected stronger twine to support their fine motor control in threading it independently. Once they threaded, all that was left to be done was tying it around their neck or wrist! So, if you want a fashion show of accessories you know where to come!
Who wants to go for an adventure walk?
We do!
Our children have enjoyed many adventure walks this week, two in particular looking for mushrooms and identifying them and exploring the current in the river and how it changes!
The foxes headed out to an adventure walk through the swamp gate on the hunt for mushrooms. They used their mushroom swatch book and mushroom identification sheet. To pick out their favourites they discussed colour, height and width. It was a great way to practise our ‘no picking, no licking’ rule as some of the mushrooms were stunning!
Another adventure walk had us explore the river. We were in awe as the river had cut through the riverbed to create the fastest route. We used leaves to drop from the troll bridge and observe them swimming downstream. We practised asking hypothetical questions and brainstormed the answers. We learnt new words such as current, flow, obstruction and eddy. Also, comparing the speeds of the leaves using faster and slower!
What a great week, we hope you all have an amazing weekend!
