At Little Forest Folk, we tend to count, calculate and consider numbers a lot as part of our everyday activities, whether it is working out if there are enough stepping stone logs for all the children on camp that day, or counting out the leaves on a leaflet from an elder tree. This week, however, we have made a super-duper effort to apply numbers to as many scenarios as we could! While educators set some very high-energy and complex physical challenges each day, children found ways to count out the number of zips on the zip line, swings on the tyre swing, steps up to the highest point of the climbing tree and sways on the balancing 'surfboard’. We even considered the numbers 1-10 as we read ‘Ten Things I Can Do For My World’ by Melanie Walsh together. This brilliant book inspired us with tips such as reminding grown-ups to turn lights off when we leave a room, sorting our recycling and using both sides of the paper when we are mark-making.
All that physical exertion had to be rewarded, as rest and recovery is an important part of regulating our emotions and giving little bodies what they need to grow and thrive! So, on Thursday the children indulged in a ‘Spa Day’, which involved a relaxing hammock (a shoes-off only zone!), a hair salon with combs, bobbles and clips, and calming classical music. The Little Forest Folk-ers got so engrossed in their rest and recuperation that many of them became princesses, butterflies, mermaids and other luxuriant creatures, donning fantastical capes, long flowing trains and fabric fish tails. We hope very much that the children carry their relaxing activities into the weekend, so that they can indulge, pamper and remember the wonderful mothers in their families this Mothering Sunday!
We hope all our families have a glorious weekend and please, all the mothers out there, take a break, put your feet up and let yourself be celebrated!
