Wimbledon - The Meadow Full of Buttercups!

This week has seen many activities and play focussing on movement in one way or another as our intelligent educators continue to challenge and inspire our Little Forest Folk-ers!

The meadow separating our Bunnies and Foxes groups is covered in buttercups, so we took the opportunity to make the most of this natural resource and a weaving activity was organised. Circles of cardboard were cut with slits around the circumference – this was a great opportunity to test the children on their 2d shape knowledge. Our little explorers used multi colour string to weave in and out of the slits on the circumference to create a pattern of diagonal lines. Once they had finished, the children went out onto the meadow to collect some buttercups, this provoked a big conversation about the difference between picking and sustainably cutting the stems. Using scissors, our little adventurers cut the stems of the buttercups and threaded their flowers onto their weaving base. They spent all morning on the meadow in the sunshine enjoying their crafting activity, a huge success!

Another highlight of our week has been caring for wildlife. We have the delight of experiencing the life cycle of many animals at Little Forest Folk Wimbledon, our favourites including rabbits and caterpillars. The children then took this one step further and created a vet play! They used our cheeky wipes to create beds and blankets for our toy animals. Shortly after, a hospital was created and our children were running round base camp trying to get the right vet to help their animal! The animals were well looked after as they had casts put on, scans, food handed out and medicine given. The hospital then became so overrun that it had an expansion, this hospital wing had numbered rooms, so our little explorers tested their numbers by assigning an animal to each one. Hopefully the animals had a speedy recovery and don’t get injured again!

A final highlight of our week has been the children using a guide rope in the climbing tree to foster independence whilst climbing. They worked together to tie it up and ensure it was the right height for everyone so they can now walk along the length of the tree!

What a fabulous week, we hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
