Wimbledon - making bird feeders

An exciting return to the forest...

We were all so excited to return back to our forest this week. Our children have been back to their favourite place, exploring all that the forest has to offer!

Our children have been busy creating this week. One of our favourite activities was making broomsticks. We used large sticks as the main part and then found a lot of smaller twigs to add on. The children worked out how to tie some string on the end to keep the smaller twigs together. Once the broomstick was completed, they were used to “fly” around the forest. We had witches and wizards casting spells on the monsters of the forest!

Another one of the activities which has been enjoyed was making bird feeders. Some of the children used pinecones and put some coconut oil and bird seed on them. Others just mixed coconut oil and seeds to make a ball which they stuck on the tree. Whilst making the feeders, the children talked about the reasons that we need to make extra food for the birds in the winter. They spoke about there not being enough berries on the trees and only a few wiggly worms. It was great to see them gain even more understanding of how the forest and its wildlife survives.

Although the rain may seem endless sometimes, it provides us with so many opportunities and fun activities to do. The children have loved transporting water around the forest in different containers, testing which ones are best to carry large amounts of water. They have been working on the ideas of “more” or “less”, as well as working out the weight of the containers filled with water. It has shown our children the different ways we can use sizes and shapes in their play.

There have also been some little signs of spring which our children have been noticing. We have spotted daffodils and snowdrops, along with the new shoots of grass that are popping up. These have created many conversations within our groups about the seasons and what we might find in the forest in the coming weeks.

It’s been a great week, joined by a few holiday campers, full of fun and activities for all our children! Have a lovely weekend all!
