Our Week in the Forest...
We’ve had such a lovely week welcoming back lots of old faces for our holiday camp and it has taken them no time to fit right back into forest life.
It’s been wonderful to hear about the skills they’ve developed at school; how some can now confidently write their name and other words and some can recognise lots of letters and know lots of the sounds for them. Some have learnt things about space, others have learnt about different countries and some have made new friends. They have excitedly shared these stories with the educators and the other children.
One of the highlights of our week was going on a pumpkin treasure hunt. Our Little Forest Folk-ers followed a trail through the forest looking for pumpkins hiding up in trees, under logs and behind bushes. Each pumpkin had a different letter on it with a Halloween related word being spelled out at the end.

Can you figure out the word?
We had an adventure walk most days and the children loved the opportunity to explore more of the common. For those returning for holiday camp, this was a regular occurrence pre-summer. For the children who have joined us in September this is something we have slowly been introducing and it was great to have it back again. Although the walks have been a little shorter and a little slower with so many two-year olds, it gives us more time to stop and look at the things around us.
One amazing aspect of nature that we’ve been particularly keen to focus on was mushrooms. The damper, darker weather has brought them out in force and we’re very aware of just how dangerous these can be. Our Little Forest Folk-ers have loved some of the terrifying names the mushrooms have Destroying Angel, Panther Cap and Fool’s Funeral. It’s all added to a Halloween themed week and the children helped police the forest, ensuring each time a mushroom was discovered the message would be passed on to prevent anyone from touching it.
This week, we have also enjoyed playing with the parachute. We began as fish trying to escape from the net and the game developed in various different ways each time it would require the children to try and run under the parachute before it would be collapsed down on top of them. We’ve also made things with clay, played on swings, sang lots of song, told lots of stories and painted some wonderful pictures. All in all, a fab week in the forest!
Wishing you a great weekend and looking forward to what next week has in store for us!
