This week in the forest we finally got our first glimpses of the Green Tortrix Moth. These docile moths have come from the caterpillars that have been dangling and swinging all about our heads for the past few weeks. Several were spotted on an afternoon adventure walk, with children wowed by their bright green vivacity a “bit like parakeets”. Two settled on educators at the site so we could get a closer look at tiny features. Children were supported to understand that wings were particularly delicate, and vital for flying. Here, we also learnt that the colourful wings on moths and butterflies are actually formed by tiny scales made from modified hairs, with some children exclaiming “fish have scales too!”. Seeing these moths has helped us to finally understand the full cycle of these creatures, and by using bug identifying books alongside stories about butterflies we have extended learning in all areas.
