Twickenham - Everyone Meet Ruby!

This week in the forest, we wore our mathematical hats to observe the forest in a different way. We looked around the forest to spot different shapes and patterns. We also put our counting skills to the test. First, we explored sizes by searching the forest floor for the biggest and smallest leaves. When we collected enough leaves, we sat down and worked as a team to put them in order from the biggest all the way down to the smallest. Then we thought it would be fun to see if we could sort them according to shades of colour from the darkest to the lightest shade. Then we had a brilliant idea to use them to make our very own Little Forest Folk robot collage! We used different sizes and colours of squares and rectangles to make a robot that looked like our friends.

Later in the week, the forest transformed into Santa’s workshop! Our special elf-friend Ruby is visiting us from Santa’s workshop for the next few weeks. We had so much fun trying to find Ruby in the forest in the morning. Ruby helped us learn the names of geometric solids such as cubes and cylinders and then observed how well we wrapped them with colourful tinsel. Then some of our friends thought it would be wonderful to make bracelets by threading wooden shapes and twisting festive pipe cleaners to make candy cane decorations to hang along our tarp to make the forest look like Santa’s workshop.

Miranda brought some new, fantastic Christmas books to read to us which we all enjoyed and really helped to get us into a festive mood. We imagined what it would be like to be one of Santa’s special helpers to prepare the presents for Santa to deliver on Christmas Eve.

We also learned how to keep ourselves and our friends healthy with the germs sneaking around the forest. We reminded each other of the importance of washing hands before we eat, after we go to the toilet and when we use a tissue to wipe our noses. We also practised blowing our noses using tissues and making sure that we put the used tissues in the bin so no one else can catch the germs. As well as this, we reminded ourselves how important it is that everyone is eating well and drinking lots of water, whilst also making sure we dress warmly in the forest by wearing five layers of trousers, five layers of jumpers, five hats, five pairs of socks and five pairs of gloves to keep us toasty warm. We think five is a good number!

We will be back next week with more stories of our adventures in the forest. Until next time!
