This week marks the British Science Week and the theme for this year is ‘Connections’. How wonderfully fitting it is to celebrate this in the forest as we joyfully celebrate togetherness and recognise our ties with nature.
Although we started our week in the indoor space because of the strong winds, this did not stop our hungry and curious minds from learning. Our eco school committee is back on track as they held their meeting and talked about our focus areas for this term: Biodiversity, Healthy Living, and School Grounds. Our little eco warriors, led by Louise and Alys, are absolutely excited to work on another Eco-School Green Flag!
Speaking of healthy living, while we tested our green thumbs as we tried planting cress on recycled egg boxes and paper towel, our muscles were also at work as we enjoyed our Forest Boot Camp (the crowd favourite ‘equipment’ was our own barbell made from a thick stick and two tyres!). We also made a collage of our favourite healthy foods using paper plates and cut out food pictures from old magazines. We ultimately learnt the connection of eating well and taking care of your body will keep you healthy!
The strong winds at the beginning of the week inspired our Little Forest Folk-ers to study the connection between the changes of seasons and weather and the flora and fauna that we have around us. Daffodils are starting to bloom and ravens are becoming more regular in our campsite as they start to collect lots of sticks for their nests. Furthermore, we looked at different life cycles of insects, such as bees and butterflies, and prepared a hang out place for them ready for spring and summer by planting flowering plants in our garden.
Of course, Science Week would not be complete without doing experiments and the fabulous Lisa led our little scientists in our discoveries. We looked at a fun way of how rain works by using shaving foam and water and dropping food colouring on it. We also marvelled at a snowstorm in a jar where we saw how the mixture of baby oil, water, paint and glitter reacted to drops of crushed Vitamin D!
We cannot do all of this without the ‘connection’ and bond we have towards each other. Two is better than one, indeed! Have a lovely weekend!
