Putney Heath - Exploring the World of Money

What a fantastic week it has been in our forest nursery! Our Little Forest Folk-ers have been busy learning, creating, and celebrating together. From diving into the world of money to flipping pancakes over the fire and dressing up as their favourite book characters, there has been no shortage of adventure!

Exploring the World of Money

This week, we introduced an exciting new theme—money! The children were fascinated to learn where money comes from and how different countries use different currencies. We explored coins and notes from around the world, comparing their colours, sizes, and values. The children played fun games like British coin recognition, helping them to identify coins and begin understanding their worth.

To put their learning into practice, the children also worked on their number writing and counting skills, using coins to help with their sums. Some of our budding mathematicians even began adding up amounts and discussing what they could “buy” with different coins! It was wonderful to see their confidence with numbers growing each day. The highlight of the week was when the children created their own forest money! Using their creativity, they designed and decorated coins and notes, giving them fun names and values. But their money wasn’t just for decoration—later in the week, the children got to spend their hard-earned currency at camp! They used it to “purchase” resources like natural materials, tools, and special treasures, giving them a real-life experience of trading and exchanging.

Big Words for Little Learners

This week, our explorers also worked on expanding their vocabulary with some fantastic new words. From describing their handmade coins to talking about the towering trees around them, the children practiced using words like ‘ginormous’ and ‘tiny’ in their conversations. It was wonderful to hear them experimenting with language and expressing themselves with so much excitement!

Pancake Day Fun

Tuesday was Pancake Day, and what a delicious day it was! Our forest transformed into a pancake factory, where the children took part in every step of the process. In the morning, they worked together to mix up a vegan pancake batter, carefully measuring, stirring, and pouring. They loved seeing how the ingredients came together to form the perfect pancake mixture!

In the afternoon, the real magic happened—cooking pancakes over the fire! The smell of freshly cooked pancakes filled the forest, and the children watched in awe as their batter sizzled on the pan. When it was time to eat, they got to choose their own toppings, with the favourites of the day being bananas, honey, and powdered sugar. It was a wonderful hands-on experience, and the children loved every bite!

World Book Day Adventures

Later in the week, we celebrated World Book Day, and the forest was filled with stories, imagination, and creativity! The children dressed up as their favourite storybook characters, and we saw everything from classic fairy tale figures to adventurous explorers roaming through the trees.

To bring stories to life, we had an immersive Bear Hunt experience, where the children followed a trail through the forest, splashing through pretend rivers, tiptoeing through tall grass, and crawling into a bear cave—just like in the beloved book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt! The excitement and laughter were contagious! Another highlight of the day was making our very own patchwork Elmer the Elephant! Inspired by the classic children’s book Elmer, the children worked together to create a bright and colourful elephant using different materials. This wonderful craft activity encouraged teamwork and creativity, and the final result was absolutely beautiful!

It has been an incredible week full of learning, exploration, and fun. From numbers and new words to pancakes and playful storytelling, our Little Forest Folk-ers have had an unforgettable time. We can’t wait to see where next week’s adventures will take us! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend filled with joy, discovery, and maybe even a story or two!
