It may not be March the 21st yet but it has really felt like spring has sprung in the forest this week, with glorious sunshine, gentle breezes, buzzing bees, daffodils, crocuses, and snowdrops sprinkling the forest with colour.
We have had a wonderful time this week expanding our understanding of the world around us by building a bug hotel, revelling in plant and flower identification, investigating the lives of small creatures under stones and logs and being amazed by tiny pearlescent slug eggs.
Pancake Day allowed us the opportunity to create bird seed filled pancakes for the wildlife, soft, squishy, grey clay pancakes in the mud for sensory play in the mud kitchen and we made real pancakes which we tasted and really enjoyed!
World Book Day was a wonderful day as we encouraged all our explorers to dress as their favourite characters and bring the corresponding book to nursery. We had children arrive for the day as Dinosaurs, Willy Wonka, The Cat in the Hat, The Hungry Caterpillar and The Tiger who came to Tea to name but a few! Even the staff came in as their favourite characters and we had The witch from Room on the Broom, the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, Where’s Wally, and Little Miss Sunshine.
One day our forest was set up for the day with the theme of “The Gruffalo” and activities included making Gruffalo crumble, mixing, stirring and feeling the textures of the bright green scrambled snake and the mud kitchen was the owl ice cream factory. We challenged the children’s imagination and creativity as they created roasted fox, snipping up red and orange paper with scissors and seasoning it, prior to roasting it.
