Putney Heath - A Shape-Filled Adventure!

This week, our new theme has been Shapes, and our adventurers have been diving into the world of geometry while continuing to strengthen their counting skills through play!

We began by exploring shapes in nature, looking closely at how the natural world is full of hidden patterns. We spotted octagons, decagons, stars, and spirals in delicate spider webs, noticed big and small circles making up a robin, and even found triangles in leaves! Inspired by these discoveries, the children recreated these natural shapes on paper, using a burst of technicolour designs to bring them to life.

Over in our ice cream parlour mud kitchen, we explored 3D shapes like cones, cylinders, spheres, and cubes. As we practiced these exciting new words, the children used their shapes to create imaginative ice cream cones, topping them with oranges and flowers as sprinkles and sticks for flakes - a true 99p parlour special!

Pattern-making also took centre stage as our magnetic tiles became stamps! The children picked their favourite shapes to create ‘AB’ and ‘ABC’ type patterns, stamping squares, triangles, and rectangles in beautiful designs. As we worked, we counted the sides of each shape, helping to deepen our understanding of geometry.

We also explored momentum using clay, experimenting to see which shape moves the best down a ramp. The children crafted squares, balls, and rolls out of clay, testing which shapes traveled the furthest and which got stuck. Some even added speed bumps to change the results, sparking a great discussion on how shapes and surfaces affect movement!

It's been an exciting, hands-on week of exploration, creativity, and problem-solving, and we can’t wait to see what next week brings.

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone! 🌿✨
