This week in the forest we’ve been exploring all the loose parts around us and letting our creativity flow. Magic is in the air with Halloween next week so on Monday we went on an otherworldly adventure walk with Charlotte and Kitz! The children looked for sticks around the forest and placed them on the ground to make fairy doors. After we tied them together with string, the adventurers placed them around the forest for the fairies to pass through and travel home for winter. This prompted lots of lovely conversations about size and measurement with the children finding sticks that were longer, shorter, thicker or thinner. When it came to assemble the doors, some chose to make triangles and others laid their sticks out in squares and rectangles. We love how Maths is everywhere in the forest, once we take the time to look.
These kinds of activities have fostered so much inspiration for our little ones who have taken the lead in running their own. One morning we were all instructed on how to make fairy wands with one Little Forest folk-er taking charge. These moments are so magical and it’s really exciting as educators to let our children lead the way, while offering them the space, support and resources to make their visions come to life.
Finding that spark of interest and feeding it is at the heart of our approach at Little Forest Folk. At the end of the week our Little Forest Folk-ers were really interested in knot-tying. Seeing this, the wonderful Joe made sure to get a variety of ribbon, cord and yarn for everyone to explore. A couple of children exploring tying together, turned into a group project with our whole community creating a spiderweb of rainbows, focusing and working together for the entire afternoon. The little spiderlings made sure to leave the rainbow web up so they could keep working on their project the next day. We’re so excited to see how it turns out!
