Let’s build a House!
In the Morden forest this week there’s been lots of interest in construction, especially building houses! The explorers have been following the lead of the educators and using tarps to make their own shelters dotted around the forest space. These are being used as fire stations, houses, and police stations alongside their imaginative play. They have been working in little groups to safely make the walls for their houses stand independently and ensure that there was enough space for the other children to fit in as well!
As this interest in building was getting stronger through the week, we got out our ‘paper brick press’ to make our own building blocks! The children have been soaking the used paper towels in water, ripping them into small bits, and putting them in the press to squeeze all the water out. When they dry, they can be used to make building bricks to aid the children in their building play or used to burn on the fire as a substitute for burning wood! It also gives the children the chance to talk about the different things we can recycle!
The children came into the forest one morning this week to find a tarp hung up creating an art wall! It was a great opportunity for the children to experiment with different ways of mark making and creating shapes and colours. Having the canvas hung up all day meant that the children could come back through the day and add to it if they liked and talk to their friends about the cool things they painted.
Our cooking activities this week saw the Forest Folk-ers roasting bananas on the fire! This was a new cooking activity for the children. They helped out by independently cutting the bananas in half with a little support from the educators and watched as the skins changed colour and tasted how soft and sweet the bananas turned inside! We can’t wait to introduce the little chefs to some more Christmassy recipe ideas as we come closer to the end of term!
