Morden - Harvesting Our Veggie Garden

This week in the forest, our children jumped into loads of different activities focused on supporting our setting and developing our learning space. We were practicing our tool use with Vicky to add more elements to our water play wall, by drilling holes in bamboo pipes and screwing them onto the wooden chalice. The children did a wonderful job of following direction, and kept themselves and their friends really safe while using these risky tools! This has been a really great project for the children to see their work in action, and how great it feels to build something with your own two hands!

We have also been starting on our harvest for the veggie garden - we've been picking kale, runner beans, strawberries and mint for some delicious smoothies! The children are really conscious of only picking the veg which is ready to be picked, and caring for the produce until it's time to prep them for our yummy snack.

Another fun skill we've been practicing this week has been our fire lighting skills! It's been a while since we've used the old flint and steel, and seeing the children remember the technique and developing their grip strength has been such a pleasure. Children who were struggling to create a spark a few short months ago are now confident in their skills, and helping to teach others! The self confidence that forest skills develop is such a treat to see as practitioners, and the learners always find more and more to get out of this activity!
