Follow the map!

In our beautiful forest space, there is always new treasure which pops up when we dig and explore, and we love to create stories and play around with what we’ve found, “Look I have a gold stone! This must be someone’s treasure!”. To build on this, we had an activity where we made our own ‘dinosaur bones’ using a special dough mix! The children helped with the measuring and mixing to make the dough a nice texture and moulded them into bone shapes ready to cook in the oven. The next morning, we buried the bones around the forest ready for finding! We have a map of the forest made to help us out and practice our map reading skills! The children had a brilliant time searching and looking for clues. We haven’t found all the bones yet, but we’re excited to keep the search going!

One of the children’s favourite activities over the summer was crafting with clay, and we love to revisit this activity every now and again so that the children can experiment and make models of the things they’ve been most interested in recently! This week we had lots of animal crafts; the children found sticks and leaves to add details to their creations, and loved to share their ideas with others, and helped each other if they needed help with their crafting!

The nature and wildlife in our forest is coming back gradually as we approach spring! We’ve been really enjoying watching the bird houses and seeing how many little birds we can spot hopping in and out. The children have been using the climbing tower as a look out spot for their bird watching, finding ways to safely climb the ladder while carrying the binoculars with them “I have the binoculars in my hood to keep them safe!”.

There’s been so much teamwork and communication while playing, sharing the building blocks and play resources by using our communication and patients. The children are also encouraging each other to talk about what they need and sharing how they feel; it’s been so lovely to hear this communication and vocabulary independently between the children!
