Christmas is Coming!
The forest shop has been growing in business, the children love to take on the role of shopkeepers and customers, offering to swap their favourite things that they have found in the forest that day. The children are having such lovely conversations while at the shop; talking about where they found their treasures, and why they like them so much! As we’ve been making lots of Christmas trinkets this week, the children have taken so much pride in showing off the things they’ve made with their friends! The shop has been such a hub of creative play, and sharing our things we treasure the most!
To celebrate the week before Christmas, we’ve had lots and lots of fire activities, and cooking yummy treats! These fire circle activities have been encouraging the children to make their own “fire circle” during their imaginative play! They will collect small sticks and hay together, talk about which sticks are the driest and “best for the fire”, and remind each other of the rules to “keep safe!”.
One of the tastiest snacks we had on the fire this week was a “hot snack wrap!”, we used wraps filled with chopped banana and chocolatey sirup, and heated them over the fire to get them nice and gooey inside! Some of the children really enjoyed breaking up the bananas into small pieces before giving them back to Spike ready to cook!
As the children have been so interested in the fire circle, we introduced the children to flint fire lighters, so that they could create the heat that was needed to start a fire. With the help of an educator, the children practiced the hand motions to strike the flint in the correct way. With guidance from the adults, we were able to make some bright sparks, and used small pieces of cotton wool to make our own small fires! The focus from the children was wonderful, they all kept each other safe by following the rules, and showed fantastic listening skills while practicing. With more practice, we can’t wait to see if they can start making their own sparks!
We hope you all have a very lovely Christmas, and we can’t wait to see you all in the new year!
