This week we saw plenty of festive themed fun in the build up to Christmas Day. The season has tied in perfectly with our fortnightly intention; “phonics, rhythm, music, crafts and understanding the world”. We saw some out-of-the-box thinking when a collection of loose parts (benches and planks) became an aeroplane, which was perfectly crafted with wings and plenty of seating room. Children took turns being the plane driver and counted down from 10 before lift-off! 🛫Due to lots of our Little Forest Folk-ers having some exciting holidays recently, camp conversation have been rich with “understanding the world themes” like transport, weather and geographical characteristics. We discussed where we’d like the plane to take us and of course we landed on The North Pole, for a quick trip to visit Santa and his reindeer! 🎅🏽⭐️

Camp has had its very own loose-parts Christmas tree made from hula hoops and piping. We repurposed our favourite craft resource (leaves) and decorated them with paint pens. We supported the children in tying these to the tree, creating a repurposed material Christmas tree- fantastic resourceful work everyone! 🍂

Our crafts got a bit technical too! With some clever hand movements, children would fold, bend and punch card into a cone shape. This acted as the body of a festive angel. Next, children personalised their own set of wings, using an assortment of mark making materials, before sticking the wings to the body. Finally, small tree cookies were perfect for the head of the angel. So, with some carefully placed facial features, the design came together resulting in a perfect tree topper! 👼 Here in the forest we particularly value child-led mark making opportunities, where our little adventurers can explore art and creation with little-to-no limitations, fashioning wholly personal and self-directed creations. But occasionally, crafts that follow clearer briefs are a great opportunity to see skills like: step following, problem solving, comprehension and strengthening their working memory. We saw some great dedication and motivation in this task and had some gorgeous angelic results, well done team! ❄️
