Fulham - "The Hungry Caterpillar"

“Understanding the World & Understanding the Key Features of the Life of a Plant and an Animal”

This week we have been using a nursery story classic “The Hungry Caterpillar” to explore the life cycle of some of our favourite bugs. We chose to look at the life cycle of a caterpillar, it's cocoon and it's transformation into a butterfly. We used arts & crafts to access this learning, creating puppets of each of the stages. We discussed in groups what sequence we thought the cycle went in, using sequential language like “next”, “then”, “firstly” and “lastly” and attempted to order these. We then handed out the puppets and put on a puppet show on our stage!

After this we moved under the climbing tree for a comfy story time, where educator Maria used the props to support her story telling. Children had opportunities to consolidate their learning and guess what part of the cycle was going to take place next.

We then moved our bodies, using big shapes and our gross motor movements with colourful butterfly wings on our backs, soaring through the sky straight out of our cocoons! We used clay to represent the starting process of the butterflies life cycle, creating wiggly caterpillars using the palm of our hands to squish and roll the dough into long winding straws.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend with your families - see you next week!
