Fulham - Road safety week and Pudsey bear

Road safety week and Pudsey bear

It’s been such an amazing week in the forest. The children have fully immersed themselves in the Autumn spirit and are absolutely loving the joys of playing with the fallen leaves! From walking on top of them and listening to the crunchy sounds they make, to gathering them into a pile and creating a “Volcano the size of the solar system”!

This week we’ve been talking about how to stay safe on the road. The children were fascinated by the different transports available and decided to make some of their own. They’ve used cardboard to make boats, decorated with colourful paint and even made a pond to see how their boats would float. Pippa created an amazing bus in the morning at set up with a zebra crossing in front so children could practice their skills when crossing a road. Our Little Forest Folk-ers are used to using the traffic light system when walking to and from the forest and they had a lot of fun whilst learning how to stay safe. When an educator says “RED LIGHT” everyone stops! Then when it’s GREEN LIGHT they continue to walk.

The children also made some helicopter propellers and using their hands, practiced rubbing them together to make the pencil spin, which is no easy task when you have very small hands, but our children are unbeatable and kept on trying until they succeed.

The musical instruments were very popular this week as well. We’ve had many requests for songs to be sung while the children experimented with different rhythms and melodies. It is so soothing and magical when we are playing in the forest, and we can hear in the background someone playing and singing a gentle song.

Reading and storytelling is always a favourite activity at Fulham and our children have been independently finding a quiet spot to read their favourite book or read a story to a friend.

Another fun activity was celebrating Children in Need with Pudsey bear. The children listened attentively to the educators at circle time while they explained what the celebration was about. They enjoyed creating their own version of a Pudsey bear making and decorating bandages for their heads and nurses hats, which they transferred into their imaginative play and became doctors in hospitals helping children in need around the world. They have also enjoyed making puppet shows and looking after the stuffed animals that came to the forest for a picnic with Pudsey bear!

Mark making has been incredible and the children take any opportunity and any material to do it! We see letters, numbers, drawings, and other abstract marks everywhere in the forest! The children were particularly interested in numbers this week, and we had lots of activities and games for them to extend their learning further.

We hope you too had a lovely week, and we’ll see you all after the weekend!
