Our Week in the Forest...
It has been another beautiful Autumnal week in the forest where the children have been observing the magical seasonal colours that are transforming the Palace gardens. This has definitely inspired their ongoing interest in art media which they have been using on all the items they have collected on their adventure walks each day, from pieces of terracotta to pine cones and bark.
As the children are observing more and more details in their environment they are also making new discoveries in places they are more familiar with, particularly after the heavy rain which has revealed previously hidden objects. This week some of the children had noticed some pieces of ceramic in the ground near our log circle, so using trowels and pointy sticks they carefully removed the soil around the objects like true archaeologists and discovered they were much bigger than they thought. The children discussed what they could be, suggesting an underground house, buried treasure, some old bricks or even dinosaur bones. There is still some work needed so hopefully they can reveal what they find next week!
Music has also been filling the air throughout the week with the sounds of drums, xylophones, shakers and the cha chas echoing across the gardens. The children have loved experimenting with various sounds and rhythms together, observing how the sounds changed depending on how the instruments were used, with some beating the drums quietly and rhythmically whilst others beat them as loud as they could! We also played a few games to see how quietly they could play them, harder than you think, and whether they could count a specific number of shakes or beats.
Imaginary role playing has been dominated by seafaring adventures this week. The loose parts were used to construct some incredibly innovative designs to accommodate the intrepid adventurers on their trips across the oceans, they have even incorporated beds, kitchens and places for their pets, to make their journeys as enjoyable as possible.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you next week!
