This week, our younger Little Forest Folk-ers have been collaborating to create pirate ships to climb aboard “Quick! Quick! You’re in the water! Grab on!” It is fantastic to see them developing their idea of teamwork and learning how to safely transport heavier items around the camp in pairs. This leaning towards sharing experiences is also echoed in quieter moments as they gather round logs to draw and practice their writing, pointing out features and complimenting each other’s efforts.
The gusty wind brought shrieks and hilarity as we wrestled to hang the tarp as it flapped around. They played at running through the rippling fabric and shouted for their friends to have a turn.
The older children have been taken over with treasure fever and we discovered a bottle with a note inside one morning at circle time! The pirates had visited our camp the night before and left us treasure hidden all over the site!
We’ve been building dens and using fantastic concentration and delicate movements to construct small world tepees and houses “carefully, carefully don’t knock it - ahhh! Start again!” This activity really helps to develop their concepts of balance and estimation and also their patience!
The mud kitchen has seen some truly delightful cakes with intricate and delicate designs carefully placed on top. It quickly grew into a group effort, evolving over an hour or so; some children gathered pinecones, tiny leaves and husks, others grouped around to watch and chat and some directed operations with creative zeal!
What a fantastic bunch! Can’t wait to see what next week brings.
