Our Week in the Forest...
It has been an extra special week at Fulham, as we have just celebrated our 3rd Birthday and in true Little Forest Folk style, James presented us with the most amazing cake designed to look just like our forest. The children were incredibly excited, not only by the sight of what looked like a large chocolate cake but also by the fact that our nursery was the same age as many of them. This followed by a little confusion as it was very evident to them that our trees were definitely older than 3, which took a little bit of explaining!
It has been another week full of creativity and imagination, with wood featuring a great deal in many of the activities that have been taking place. Through imaginative play, the children can always find 101 different ways to incorporate sticks and branches into their play and learning, so we offered some new ideas this week which they absolutely loved. After preparing a variety of sticks with sprung whittled ends, our Little Forest Folk-ers incorporated charcoal and chalks into them to create ‘pencils’ of all shapes and sizes that they then used to decorate a large piece of calico fabric.
Throughout the week, the children have also been using the tools to create ever more complex creations from component parts, some foraged during their exploration and others made beforehand for when they had the opportunity to use a different tool. To support their understanding, Bella delivered a session during which the children discussed what could be made from the parts they had previously drilled and sawn. They suggested ways that doweling could be incorporated into tree cookies to make turning wheels and the reasons why sometimes the holes needed to be smaller or larger, depending upon what materials they wanted to use. All of these inspirational ideas definitely had an impact with the most amazing items being produced for their role playing, including wooden cars, broomsticks and spinning tops.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to holiday camp next week!
