Winkworth - Science Experiments & Adventure Walks!

From bug hunts and exploration, to chasing the morning sun, what an adventurous, fun and happy week we have had in the forest!

Our Little Forest Folk-ers have been exploring the Arboretum this week and we have noticed that the National Trust has been working on their pathways to make them more accessible. We couldn’t help but notice how big the tires are on the diggers and when we measured them against our Little Forest Folk-ers, we found them to be taller than they are!

On our adventure walks we have started to see life coming into the forest as spring approaches. There have been some buds showing, as well as snowdrops and daffodils peeping out and popping open into bloom. We have been discussing how and what they need to grow and taken this into our own cottage garden. Here, our little adventurers have helped to plant donated plants into our wild area, placed stepping stones and also used natural materials to create a fairy garden. They have worked together to sprinkle some wildflower seeds in this area too; to attract all the different wildlife into the garden, we can’t wait to see which beautiful flowers grow later in the year!

On one adventure walk we were lucky enough to find some woodlice, centipedes, snails, and worms. We also found some fungi, which we promptly identified and took the opportunity to remind ourselves about mushroom safety and our ‘no picking no licking’ rule. We headed off further into the Arboretum where we found the stream. In the middle of the stream a dam had been built and not afraid to get wet, we all went into the stream and added sticks to the dam!

We finished the week off with a science experiment. Our little scientists had some bicarbonate of soda on a plate and got to experiment with using a pipet to add different colours onto it and see the reaction that occurred. As well as this being great for fine motor skill development, they couldn't believe their eyes as they saw the bicarbonate increase in size and pick up the colour that had been added.

What a fantastic week, we can’t wait for more adventures next week!
