Wimbledon Village - Running, Jumping, Crawling, Balancing & Dancing!

It seems the children at Little Forest Folk Wimbledon Village are solar powered because when the sun came out they really started to power up!

We have had a lot of travelling this week - running, jumping, crawling, balancing and dancing - whether on camp or on adventures around the common. It hasn’t all been moving and shaking though, as there were plenty of moments of calm, reflection and focus too. We talked about letter and word sounds, with some children asking adults to help them make specific marks, while some children even started to write letters from their name independently. Many children enjoyed holding chalk pens, while an educator made the shapes of words on blackboards. The children put this into practice on Monday by making St. Patrick’s Day cards and celebrating Ireland with music, including some folk songs during meal times and the ‘Hello’ or ‘Dia duit’ Song, led by educator, Liadan - our resident Irish speaker!

Inspired by Spring and all the budding trees and plants around us, we started to consider how things grow and become what we find in the forest, in gardens, allotments, parks and on our plates (or in our hands) at snack time. We looked at the pips and seeds inside an apple and a red pepper and planted some in compostable pots while we talked about the life cycle of plants and what they need to grow. We will see if any shoots emerge… This is perfect preparation for the rest of the growing season, as the brand new “Eco Committee” of children was formed, in our efforts to get a nationally recognised Eco-School Green Flag. More news on our new initiatives, chosen and carried out by the children, in weeks to come.

Here’s hoping Spring continues to bloom into the weekend and everyone has some sunny family time before returning to the forest next week!
