Wimbledon Village - Makaton & Mark Making!

In week two of our April Holiday Camp we have enjoyed using a lot of different forms of communication, as we have been lucky enough to have some new holiday camper friends to talk to, as well as some returning pals to share our camp activities and meal times with. The children have been practising their Makaton in circle time using simple signs to say “please” and “thank you”  as well as learning ways to communicate key emotions such as happy, angry, worried and sad. We talked about how the movements represent the feelings and how we can use facial expressions as well as our voice and gestures to help communicate how we are feeling.

Many children have been particularly interested in mark-making recently so we tried a lot of different ways to practice from the very simple, like sticks dragging lines through mud to the technological, such as magnet-powered sketching gadgets (‘etch-a-sketch’ to those of us old enough to remember…!). In between those very different tools we used chalks, watercolour paints, felt-tip pens, crayons and many other materials! At the same time as trying out mark-making, children also used various types of scissors, grabbers and tweezers, which help them to hone their hand eye coordination, control and grip, making them all the more prepared to hold a mark-making tool.

We have really enjoyed our week with friends, old and new and wish all the Little Forest Folk Wimbledon Village families and their own extended families a very peaceful and sunny Spring bank holiday weekend.
