Nature is the best canvas!
No matter what the weather, at Wimbledon we know how to make the best out of any situation! We have had heavy rain downpours, blustery winds and hail this week, but it hasn’t stop us from having lots of fun!
The bunny group have had a very busy week. We have had a couple of adventure walks throughout the week which have been lovely for some of our newer children to go out on. Exploring the different parts of the forest and seeing what it has to offer has been so interesting for everyone to investigate.
We have spotted a huge array of mushrooms recently, and this has led to many conversations between the children. We have looked at the different colours, shapes and sizes and have been able to identify them using swatch books or a special app on the educator’s phones. Recognising them means that we can make the children more aware of the dangers that some of them may present to us, and it also widens their knowledge of the forest.
Whilst looking for the mushrooms we have also been using our counting knowledge and adding them up as we go. Then at the end we can see how many we have spotted as a group and talk about the similarities and differences.
Our children have also been busy creating different nature activities this week. We started off by making nature mobiles. These included finding smaller sticks to attach to each other using different coloured string, and then attaching different things from around the forest to the string. These then moved on a level and the children started to make nature curtains. This included using a large piece of string attached to two trees and then attaching smaller pieces of string that would hang down. The children then added leaves, acorns and twigs which looked amazing as they blew in the wind. The children all worked together and loved the final outcome as it could hang in the forest for as long as we wanted.
We have been really enjoying our story time in the forest. We have recently had an arrival of some new books and this has prompted lots of exciting reading time. We have had lots of books on diversity which has been so lovely for all of our children to read. They have loved finding children in the books that may relate to them and being able to share that with their friends.
It’s been a busy week, with some old friends returning for holiday camp. We have welcomed everyone back and they have shown us some of their favourite things that they remember from the forest, as well as learning new things from our current children.
No matter what the weather, the forest is always the perfect place for fun! We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
