Wimbledon - Global Recycling Day!

A dry and sunny week at Wimbledon where the mud is finally starting to recover! Hurray!

This week had spectacular activities all based around our textures theme. Our wonderful staff have been able to engage our children and inspire them further!

It was Global Recycling Day earlier on this week and the children loved reusing materials in different ways. The children have loved reading stories and acting them out afterwards, so it was a fantastic opportunity to provide a hands on experience by our little explorers planting kidney beans after reading Jack and The Beanstalk! This is going to test the children to a whole new level with their patience skills as it will take a couple of weeks for them to germinate in the soaked cotton wool. Papier Mache was another fantastically popular activity with recycling in mind as we made use of some old newspapers. Our little adventurers worked with flour and water to stick the strips of newspaper onto a balloon. Next week when they are dry, we’ll be able to decorate them all, and some children may even choose to decorate them as Easter Eggs!

We have also welcomed the Spring Equinox. We are lucky enough to have experienced a real mix of weather so far this year, with lots of rain and now sun which has provided the forest the key elements to grow and blossom. This week the children have gone on adventure walks around our site and our local woodland to identify signs of Spring by using a checklist for their scavenger hunt. The children showed their inquisitive sides as they were walking around hunting for clues and living things. They even spotted a couple of living animals that weren’t on the list! After spotting a few bumble bees and butterflies, they have been working on their stillness and quietness to show that we are kind to wildlife. After looking down on the ground for footprints, moss, lichen and flowers, it was time to look up and see what birds we could find. Lo and behold we spotted two birds’ nests! It was a very excited conversation as all of our Little Forest Folk-ers wondered what was inside…
