Wimbledon - experimenting with colour

This week has been a very chilly one, but so much fun! The children have loved being out in the snow and the ice, but also being able to have the shelter of an indoor area for a bit of warmth throughout the day.

Our children have had lots of different activities this week to keep them busy. We have had an abundance of painting, play dough making and creating words out of wooden letter cookies. The children have loved being able to take part in some activities that can sometimes be a bit tricker to do in the winter, but this week has been the perfect time to try these out.

Painting has been one of our biggest hits this week. Our children have been experimenting with colour and mixing the different powder paints together to create a colour of their choice. Then the children could paint on large rolls of paper or smaller pieces to take home. We had some animals painted, some pictures of the forest and some “self-portraits”. It’s great to see how the children use different colours for different emotions in their artwork too, and they understand the use of colours for emotions.

We used some of the crates and pallets at the scout hut to make a castle. The children each added different parts to the castle, including a wooden bridge to climb across and some logs as steps to climb up and down on. The children had a great time taking turns to climb in and out and up and down the side of the castle. They also created a game that the castle was the only safe spot, and one of the adults was the monster who catches the children. They counted to 10 before the monster could run, and then all shouted for the adult to run!

The ground outside of the scout hut was great in the ice and the perfect spot for experiments. The children used food colouring to test how to make different colours and see how it spread in the ice. They also made different ice shapes with cutters and ice trays. Some of our children put the ice out in the morning and tested if it had frozen by the end of the day, which most days it had! It was lovely to have different experiments and use the weather to our advantage!

We can’t wait to be back in our forest, but this week at the scout hut has shown how great our children are at embracing change! It’s a great way for them to learn new skills!

We hope you all have wonderful weekends!
