March has surprised us again with this week's weather and our Little Forest Folk-ers have been finding the perfect activities to do to keep them warm under the white fluffy clouds.
We started off this week preparing for our Ukraine fundraiser which we held at our parents evening on Tuesday. As you can imagine this is a difficult topic to discuss with our children and we made sure we kept the focus on helping those in need. We discussed how the people in Ukraine did not have their homes and food at the moment and therefore we needed to raise money, so they were able to buy some. Some children questioned whether they had toys and when they heard “sadly not”, it left food for thought. Motivated through their generous nature, the children got going on making various creations to help raise money for our friends in need.
Some children were busy making bracelets and necklaces using beads in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. It was interesting to see how some children alternated between yellow and blue, making a pattern and others selected the colour they felt was right.
We also decorated canvas pencil cases and bags using yellow and blue paint, and the children paid close attention to detail when considering how they were going to design them. Some children also made an observation that when mixing blue and yellow, it makes green! Thank you to everyone who donated to the fundraiser and if any of our current parents would still like to give a donation then it is not too late.
As well as our fundraiser the children have been getting busy exploring the world around them. Music has been extremely popular this week and here at Twickenham with our large repertoire of songs, the children spend vast amounts of time with an instrument in hand and singing their favourite songs, including “Hairy Scary Castle”, “London Bridge is Falling Down” and “Hush Little Baby”. It is amazing to see how independent they can be with music, keeping to the beat and singing whole songs with no prompts!
The children are never far from a physical challenge in the forest and this week challenged themselves to a very tricky tightrope. The rope was quite wobbly, and it was amazing to see the children using their muscles to try and control their bodies, preventing them from falling off and to reach the other end of the rope.
Towards the end of the week the children got set on a project with Miranda of making a special carousel for the fairies. The children decided what animals they wanted to include on the carousel, and I am sure the fairies will be delighted when they find a meerkat, penguin, unicorn, t-rex and a peacock to ride on when they see the carousel in their garden! The children worked with Miranda to find special sticks to hold the two cardboard ends up which had been carefully cut out.
The end of the week became slightly more challenging for our Little Forest Folk-ers as the temperature dropped. This challenge meant keeping busy and we warmed ourselves up by acting out the movements of our favourite animals, these included galloping like horses, dancing like orangutans, waddling like penguins or stomping like elephants.
