Easter is well and truly upon us, and the children have enjoyed getting crafty and creative to celebrate. We began the week decorating some sparkly eggs with a variety of creative resources such as feathers, tissue paper and sequins and it was great to see the children persevering through the challenge of sticking each item on with masses of PVA glue!
The children also enjoyed visiting the Easter cafe, exploring the variety of delicacies they had to offer including ice creams and coffees. This also encouraged children to explore their mathematical language to charge the right prices for each item before their customers enjoyed sitting at their table.
Just across the way, we had our very own dentist surgery, and the children inspected their patient’s teeth using their tool kits filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, masks and even mouthwash!
The children have also enjoyed using one of our main attractions at Forest School…the tools! It has been great to see how enthusiastic the children are when faced with a giant saw, eager to take on the challenge of sawing through a large piece of wood. We used the bow saw to create tree cookies which we then made a hole in using a palm drill. Using the bow saw is a tricky task for your muscles and the children did an amazing job at persisting all the way to the end when the wood satisfyingly fell off.
Some children also felt they needed a more challenging climbing place, so we set to work creating a ladder! We also used the saw to cut perfect lengths of wood, and it was great to see the children still considering the safety rules whilst full of excitement. Once we had tested the logs to check they were safe to use for our ladder and ensured they were the right length, we set to work on creating a ladder for our forest folk to use. Libby showed the children the way to do a special type of knot called lashing which ensured the ladder was safe enough to climb. It was great to see how quickly some of the children picked up this difficult type of knot, making sure it was tight enough, so the logs did not move.
Once the ladder was created, we carefully tested it, trying to shake the steps and Libby climbed up to make sure it was super strong. We then set about creating a dinger for the top for the children to ring when they conquered the challenge. To do this we used a stick and a bowl, and the children enjoyed the satisfying ding of their victory!
A very important part of Little Forest Folk is ensuring we are keeping our carbon footprint low and looking after the natural world which we are so lucky to relish in every day. This week, the children decorated a special box which they would use for their snack waste. The box is now a very prominent part of our circle and the children have done an amazing job, with the help of our eco man Ben, to recycle any fruit waste which is added to our very own compost heap! We cannot wait for the worms to get to work so we can use the compost in our garden.
It has been such a lovely Easter break here at Little Forest Folk Twickenham, meeting new faces in the forest and making fun filled memories! We hope you all have a lovely Easter bank holiday, eat lots of chocolate and enjoy the sunshine. See you next week (starting Wednesday) for some more forest fun.
