Twickenham - Crab Tales

Hello everyone! We have been truly missing our friends from the Parakeets group (sessionals) but we are also happy to welcome new and old friends as we start the Holiday Camps this week.

We are fortunate here in the Twickenham site to have the River Crane just next to our forest. At the beginning of the week, we went on the bridge just above the river to observe the swimming fish, wading ducks, and flying birds and insects. But what we did not expect to see was a crab in the river! It was indeed exciting and fascinating to observe it crawl and find its way over the holes of a fallen brick. The following day, we were astonished to see another crab, but this time, it was on our forest floor! Unfortunately, the crab was no longer alive and this sparked lots of conversation about life cycles, habitats, and food choices of animals. The children speculated various scenarios of how the crab ended up on our site, ranging from the crab crawling up from the ocean to being dropped by a large bird because the crab snapped its beak! The children then decided to bury the crab by digging a deep hole in a quiet area in the forest, respecting the space and making sure that it had boundaries around it to remind them of the crab’s life.

Our crab tales did not stop as we went on a river walk the next day! We saw another crab by the River Crane as we were paddling through the shallow waters and observing all the moss and algae. We checked if it was alive, but sadly, it was not anymore. As we carried on with our river adventure, we stopped at different areas to pick lots of juicy blackberries, all in different sizes! We made sure to get enough for our friends and educators who were in the forest, and some for our families too! We left some for the birds, of course!

Thank you for coming to our forest! We will see you next week!
