Putney Heath - Shadow Shows

Our adventures in the forest continued this week and with the cooler weather came more physical opportunities here at Little Forest Folk Putney Heath.

Our Little Forest Folk-ers started off their week enjoying some stories under the trees, listening to our educators saying the words, and also looking at the books independently following the stories from their illustrations, remembering the words as our eyes curiously scanned.

We have also enjoyed one of our favourite forest activities this week – den building! It is great to see the children so independent whilst building dens as they negotiate with one another as to where they should put their sticks of various sizes.

Mid-week, our Little Forest Folk-ers continued to develop their physical abilities whilst using the tricky spiders web. The children are becoming excellent at handling the way the rope moves, causing their bodies to shake uncontrollably, quickly gaining control.

The children were certainly given an array of different elements this week. Wednesday saw a whole new variety of opportunities for the children as we played in the rain all day. This meant for giant tarp waterfalls, collecting droplets and lots of mud kitchen fun with an endless amount of water to play with. It is wonderful to watch the children so engaged in their play even during the rainiest of days, especially making giant mud mountains and leaping through lengthy muddy puddles!

Towards the end of the week, the children entered the forest with a giant white tarp hanging from two of our camp trees. The children noticed it straight away and were extremely curious as to what it was for. Our Little Forest Folk-ers soon found out as they explored the way the lights behind the tarp created a shadow. The children enjoyed experimenting with the light, watching as different objects created different shadows. This is when Mr Eyeball was introduced as the children noticed that holding the magnifying glasses behind the light created shadows that looked like eyeballs! This lead on to the children creating shadow shows with an audience, an assistant to notify the puppeteers who were attending and also someone to hold the lights which allowed for the shadows to be visible. It was quite the show – Mr Eyeball even interacted with the audience!
