Putney Heath - Mythical Magic

Mythical Magic

Autumn is definitely a popular month here at Little Forest Folk Putney Heath and this week we have continued to explore all things autumn!

The children started off this week befriending a friendly dragon which was so long it could fit lots of little bodies, and Lara, as it swooped and soared through the skies. It was amazing how it glided up and down, and its beautiful leaf like wings elegantly plunged through the forest. The scene was really set for the children’s imaginative play with the theme tune for “How to train your dragon” playing in the background. The children enjoyed listening to the tempo to determine how fast the dragon wings should flap.

Mythical creatures surrounded our week as Selina bought in some beautifully decorated wooden gnomes for the children to use in their small world play. It was wonderful to see them creating unique and creative names for the gnomes, and making natural homes for them to live in.

Food has also been at the centre of our children’s play this week as they have been making an array of different treats. These included an amazing chocolate cake for Libby’s 10th, 21st and 46th Birthday, some yummy chocolate pancakes and also a chocolate mashed potato cake. We may have some future chefs on our hands!

This also continued through shop role play as the children created special ice cream shops which sold an array of different ice creams. One ice cream shop was inspired by one of our Little Forest Folk-ers t-shirts as they had an ice cream van on the front and used the little door to determine whether or not they were open or closed. So many of the children wanted to buy an ice cream that the ice cream van sold out!

Towards the end of the week the children were delighted to find a swing on camp! We haven’t put up a swing for a few weeks, so it was great to have it back and watching the children use the swing so independently and taking it in turns so well makes us so proud as educators. They have been excellent at negotiating how much longer they would like to be on the swing for, saying to their friends “2 minutes” or “one more minute”, before getting off and allowing the next child to have a turn.

On Thursday and Friday, we had a special visitor come to our camp. They looked fairly recognisable but from a distance they looked rather strange, some of us felt slightly apprehensive until we realised that it was actually Lara and she was riding a dinosaur! Some of the children were a little scared to begin with but we reminded them that dinosaurs had become extinct a long time ago and that this was just a pretend dinosaur. This created lots of excitement and some children kindly stroked the dinosaur’s nose and others had a ride on the dinosaur’s back whilst holding its reigns. Every day in the forest comes a new and exciting adventure or discovery and we cannot wait to see what will come next week!

We hope you all enjoy your weekends and we look forward to seeing you for more autumn antics. Stay cosy!
