‘Playful Pirates’
We ended last week with some preparation for our very exciting Pirate themed week. The children enjoyed painting some empty egg cartons which we used as treasure chests in our pirate activities. The educators also introduced the children to some tool work which was a great hit! The children used potato peelers to whittle some elder sticks for them to use in their role play in the forest.
We began this week after a long, restful weekend with some wonderfully blustery wind, meaning we ventured onto the meadow for the day. This was a great way to begin our pirate themed week as the children were able to dig for buried treasure! The children (or should I say pirates) all worked together to dig for the treasure and although we didn’t manage to dig up the chest we’d hoped to find, we did find some special stones which are just as precious to us.
Further into the week and continuing with our Pirate inspired activities, the children enjoyed making their own telescopes. They decorated their own cardboard tubes with paint and then the educators helped them to stick some coloured cellophane onto one end of the tube. The children loved this as it meant that they could see the world in a different colour each time they looked through their telescopes. It was great to see the children use these telescopes in their role play, using logs and planks to make their pirate ship and running around the forest exploring and shouting pirate phrases like “Arrr” and “Walk the plank”.
As you can see, it has been a fantastic fun filled week. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and maybe you can find some buried treasure near you!
