Putney Heath - Lunar New Year!

This week, we’ve been diving into the magic of Lunar New Year, celebrating Chinese traditions and exploring the fascinating customs around this joyous occasion. It’s been a colourful, creative, and lively week in our forest!

🎨 Dragon Building Fun

We kickstarted the week by working together to create a magnificent Chinese dragon. Using recycled materials, we crafted a shoebox mouth, added paper strips as teeth, and assembled an incredible masterpiece. The children loved collaborating on this project and learning about the significance of dragons in Chinese culture.

🐍 Year of the Snake

As we welcome the Year of the Snake, the children made their own paper chain snakes, decorating them with vibrant stickers and adding snakeheads and tails. Each creation was unique and brought a slithery splash of colour to our forest!

🌸 Cherry Blossom Counting Trees

Our math skills came into play with cherry blossom trees. Rolling a dice, the children counted and painted the corresponding number of flowers on the branches of their trees. It was a delightful combination of creativity and counting that helped bring the spirit of spring to life.

📚 Stories of the Lunar New Year

Throughout the week, we’ve been reading books about Lunar New Year, discovering the traditions behind red envelopes, firecrackers, lanterns, and the importance of family feasts. The children were fascinated by the stories and excited to learn more about these celebrations.

🧧 Crafting Money Envelopes

Inspired by what we learned, the children created their own red money envelopes using recycled materials. They designed their own currency to tuck inside, exploring the idea of good luck and the joy of gifting.

🎆 Lanterns and Firecrackers

Our creativity continued with the construction of our own lanterns and firecrackers. The children loved using bright, festive colours and experimenting with patterns, bringing a pop of Lunar New Year excitement to our forest.

It’s been a fantastic week of celebration, exploration, and creativity. We hope your little adventurers have been as inspired as we have!

Wishing you all a happy Lunar New Year! 🧧🐍✨
