Birthday Bonanza!
It has been wonderful to welcome back the children into a crisp winter forest in the New Year and the celebrations certainly haven’t stopped as we have continued to sing Christmas songs, discuss what Santa had left for us under the Christmas tree and to also celebrate a few Birthdays!
On Tuesday this week, we sang a Happy Birthday to Bill all together and enjoyed discussing how old Bill is now. This encouraged mathematical discussions as we talked about adding one to a particular number. We also worked out how old Libby would be on her birthday on Thursday adding 1 to 23, it was amazing to see how well the children did this without needing to count from 1!
The Birthday singing did not stop there as we also sang for a few children who celebrated their birthdays over the festive break!
The children also enjoyed a long adventure through the woods exploring the frost and crunching it beneath their wellies, listening to the satisfying sound it made. We also watched as it disappeared in our hands, exploring how water can turn from a solid to a liquid because it melts.
After exploring the ice, we heard a strange noise in the forest and the children realised that there was a Gruffalo coming towards us! We sprinted through the forest, hiding behind the first big tree we could see, the Gruffalo soon found us, so we continued to run through the forest until we were safe on our camp where the Gruffalo could not catch us.
The children have also enjoyed challenging themselves physically, using an obstacle course which had been set up for us. They jumped from one log onto a ramp, carefully balancing up to the top and being very proud of themselves when they reached the end, ready to tackle the challenge again.
We also enjoyed lots of stories in the forest this week, using our hammock as a beautiful story area, getting cosy together under the trees, allowing the sun to warm up our bodies.
We have had such a wonderful first week back here at Putney Heath, we wish you all a very Happy New Year and we are all very excited to see what 2021 has to bring us in our beautiful learning environment. See you all next week!
