Our week in the forest
The build up to Christmas has had us all super excited. Two more days to be good so that we can get all the special presents we’ve asked for from Santa.
We told the children we’d forgotten to write up our lists for Santa and asked them if they could help us think of things to put on it. There were lots of creative suggestions...
We asked the children what they had put on their lists and what they think they’re getting for Christmas. It’s always such a pleasure to listen to the answers they come up with and see how excited they are.
We have been lighting up our first of many fires in the garden at Piccolo. We left the forest half an hour early so that we could get back to Piccolo and light the fire before the sunset. Josh and Arturo spoke about the procedures we need to follow once the fire is lit. We have a red rope that the children know they have to sit behind while someone gets the fire started. Once the fire was alight, we then took turns to come a little closer to warm our hands up while we practiced our respect position.
We closed our eyes and listened to the firewood burn and the children asked about the noises the fire makes while burning, inquisitive as ever. Their questions opened up the opportunity to talk about wet and dry wood. Our children said that they’d like to help find some dry sticks in the forest to use for our fire. They also gave us some suggestions as to how they thought we could dry out wood and we'll be experimenting with these ideas in the New Year. Mar played the guitar as we sang along to nursery rhymes around the fire while we sipped hot chocolate.
Our adventure walks are a great highlight of our days. Our children have now become familiar with the different areas in the gardens and are able to decide which area they’d like to explore. Some days, the hills are a firm favourite and on others we like to stay in our comfort zone and climb newly discovered trees.
