Our Week in the Forest...
As the days become longer and warmer, winter loosens its grip over the land and spring starts to cover a colourful blanket over the forest. As buds and blossoms emerge, the irrepressible energy of spring is bubbling up in our forest school, giving each child a renewed sense of curiosity and desire to participate in new adventures!
Our week started with an exciting alphabet letter hunt! The children turned into detectives and looked all around our campsite to find the alphabet letters. Through this literacy activity, our Little Forest Folk-ers practiced their letter recognition, linked the sounds of the letters with familiar words and cooperated in groups to find ways to solve the mystery of the missing letters!
Speaking about solving problems, this week, the children also enjoyed the maths activities that were set up in our forest. They counted a variety of different objects such as pasta, beans, lentils and noticed what could happen when we add or remove an item from a group of objects.
Our Little Forest Folk-ers also practiced their fine motor skills by creating their weaving crafts! Just like little spiders that weave their web, our little ones enjoyed threading with colourful threads and lines of fabrics. It was wonderful to see them discussing what they would like their weaving carpets to look like! They measured how big or small they wanted their threads to be and cut them with the scissors.
At this time of the year, we make sure our Forest School activities make the most of this newfound energy and curiosity. Whether it is searching for plants and mini beasts, joining in with the songs of the seasons or going on a long adventure walk that guarantees to tap the children into an exploration of the wonderful transformational joy of Spring.
Since we’ve experienced a lot of rain last week, we wanted to celebrate it and embrace it. With that in mind, Matt, our lovely Playworker, helped us rewrite the “Rain, rain, go away” into more rain-friendly rhyme. Since we know the melody so well, learning how to sing it was super easy and we tapped into it in no time. The forest has now been rumbling with the loud voices of children and teachers singing:
Rain, wind, snow or sun
Forest school is lots of fun
We’re outside and like to play
Any weather, everyday!
We hope whenever you are out there in the rain you embrace it as much as we do! Have a lovely, restful weekend!
