Chiswick - Book Corner

Our Week in the Forest...

This week in the forest we have been enjoying lots of activities to do with literacy. The book corner has been filled with children wanting to read stories to their friends, with educators and even making up their own stories using the helicopter book. The children have been asking lots of questions about words they come across in some of the books that they don’t know the meaning to. For example, we have learnt all about what the word “company” means and also what a “foe” is. The children came up with a great example of a foe, they all decided that a foe was the joker in the batman story!

The children have also enjoyed having a go at making salt dough this week. They helped to mix the ingredients together and also took turns stirring the mixture until it had formed a dough texture ready to use in our seashell moulds. They had a great time shaping their seashells and adding more dough when needed. We are hoping the dough will dry in time for us to paint them next week!

We have also introduced the “go find it” cards into the forest which have been great fun to take on our adventure walks and when we are spending time at Kew Gardens. Each card has a different texture, size or shape on it and the children are then set the challenge to go and find something that matches the card. They had so much fun with this challenge and enjoying pushing heavy logs around, collecting “snappy” sticks and finding “round” objects. It was especially great when we could find an object that matches more than one card!

Another important aspect of our morning routine now is letting our Little Forest Folk-ers prepare their own snack. We have given all the children opportunities to help us get the fruit ready, by chopping up bananas and peeling the oranges. They then get to hand out their well-presented fruit to their fellow peers during snack time. This has created lots independence in the forest and giving children the confidence to complete tasks all on their own! We cannot wait to see what next week brings!
