Chiswick - array of celebrations and events

This past week at Chiswick Little Forest Folk we have had an array of celebrations and events.

🧧For the celebrations of the Chinese New Year, we listened to the traditional Chinese story called the Great Race. We created Chinese fans using watercolours, paper plates and wooden sticks. More learning to be had about the Chinese New Year followed into the week as we shared the story about the jade emperor and his race with all the animals. We made paper lanterns and listened to how Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated. While we were making paper lanterns the children decorated the paper before cutting small lines down the side. This then led to a conversation about origami, and we made other objects out of paper like paper planes. The Chinese New Year is celebrated for a whole two weeks, and it is very good luck if you eat rice cakes, mandarins, and fish!

🐦 Over the week we have enjoyed role play in our little wooden den, hearing the sounds of a woodpecker, where the children were encouraged to use natural and everyday objects in order to imitate everyday actions they observe as well as use them in various creative ways!

🔢 For our mathematical and creative engagement this week we sequenced the petals of a flower starting from number 1 up to number 6. The children were supported to recognise the numbers 1-6 and to count.

🎪 In camp the little circus performers practised balancing on our slack line. We also left camp to go on lots of adventure walks in the park, where we enjoyed the sunshine and we got engaged in various physical activities such as running, digging, and looking for treasure and dancing. Later in the day, we got engaged in superhero play and happily ran around the forest!

Finally, our last activity was our wild cooking activity where the children cut different fruit such as apples, bananas and grapes using knifes and cutters. The children were encouraged to use their fine motor skills and prepare their own fruit salad which was delicious!

Our eco committee have also been focusing on nature and biodiversity this week, so the children were given animal cards where they were then able to use their imagination to create short stories of the animal of their choice. It is also so wonderful to hear the children’s incredible imaginations!
