Barnes - Storytelling and role-play

Our Week in the Forest...

Storytelling, swings and super energetic role-play were featured throughout this week.

The children this week had the opportunity to tell their own stories and have them scribed. They then gathered round a stage to act out their own narratives. It was great to see the children show off their acting skills as they changed their voices and adapted their movement to bring their characters to life! There were jungle animals, baby pine cones and families which were brought to life through the children’s enthusiasm and energy!

This week saw the return of our forest swing! The children were extremely excited and everyone wanted a go! They had to wait patiently for their turn by using a sand-timer or counting down from 20. When it was their turn they independently swung themselves to and fro enjoying spinning round and trying to go higher and higher! Throughout it all, the children showed great ability to manage their own risks and keep each other safe using the safety zone set out with sticks and leaves.

As we adventured through the forest this week the children engaged in some wonderful role-play games! One game involved all the children pretending that Charlie was an alien who had been brought to Earth from another planet. The children explained why the sky was blue and why the leaves on the trees were orange and brown. They then decided that the alien needed to get back to his own planet to breathe his own air so they tried to help him ‘take off’. They modelled how superheroes can fly by running to the top of a hill and jumping up. The alien then tried to do this but failed so the children decided that he should go to a house on Earth. They chased him around the forest until they caught him working as a team to cut off different paths and then they took him to the mud house!

Our Little Forest Folk-ers have also enjoyed lots of singing and dancing this week using our new metal bowls to play different notes. We talked about how the larger bowls made a lower pitch and tried to recreate our favourite songs. We played ‘down in the jungle’ and the children came up with their own animals showing of their knowledge of the obscure and wonderful creatures they know about!

To keep warm we have also been dancing this week. The children love getting together in a large group and exploring movement to music. It’s great to see the different ways they can move their bodies often keeping in time!

We are all looking forward to next week as we build up to Christmas. Have a lovely weekend!
